Breaking News:Yahya Jammeh to boycott AU Summit for Security reasons! As Ghana police urge demonstrators to defer action

APA-Accra (Ghana) Police in Ghana have ordered groups from Ghana, Zimbabwe and Darfur region that plan to stage demonstrations during the ninth ordinary session of African Union Summit which opens in Accra on Sunday to hold on until the end of the summit, APA learnt here.Briefing the press in Accra on Saturday, Greater Accra Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Douglas Akrofi Assiedu, said the police cannot offer protection to the demonstrators because they were over-stretched and hence should defer their action until the end of the summit.

Over 2000 police and army personnel have been deplored for the Accra Summit.

Members of Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by its Vice President, Thokozani Khupe, have planned to demonstrate against President Robert Mugabe during the summit to attract attention of the AU heads of state and government in a bid to call him to order.

Khupe and her group arrived in Accra last week and they have held several press conferences attacking President Mugabe’ ruling ZANU PF party for “misruling” the Southern African.

Another group of Ghanaians have also geared up to demonstrate against President Yaya Jameh of Gambia for failing to investigate the massacre of 44 Ghanaian migrants in Gambia in 2005.

The migrants were alleged to have been killed in Gambia en route to Senegal and eventually board a ship and migrate clandestinely to Europe.

Two years on, no action had been taken by Gambian Government to unravel the circumstances behind the killings.

Furthermore, a human rights group from Darfur Region in Sudan, also plans to stage demonstrations at the merge of the summit against President Oumar Al Bashir for the atrocities his government is perpetuating against the people of Darfur.

The Accra Summit is being held under tight security following threats by various groups to stage public demonstrations during the summit.
